Simple Cardinal Nesting Box Plans: A Step-by-Step Guide for Bird Lovers
Cardinals are beloved birds, known for their vibrant red plumage and cheerful songs. Providing them with suitable nesting sites is crucial for their well-being and the health of the ecosystem. Building a simple nesting box is a rewarding project that can support these beautiful creatures and bring joy to bird enthusiasts.
Materials You'll Need:
- 1x6-inch untreated cedar or redwood lumber
- 1/4-inch plywood
- 1-1/4-inch galvanized roofing nails
- Wood glue
- Drill with 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch bits
- Circular or jigsaw
- Sandpaper
Step 1: Cut the Lumber
Using your circular or jigsaw, cut the following pieces from the 1x6-inch lumber:
- 2 pieces: 6 inches x 6 inches (front and back panels)
- 2 pieces: 6 inches x 5-1/2 inches (side panels)
- 1 piece: 5-1/2 inches x 5-1/2 inches (bottom panel)
Step 2: Assemble the Box
Apply wood glue to the edges of the front and back panels. Position the side panels between them and secure with 1-1/4-inch nails.
Next, glue and nail the bottom panel into place. Make sure all corners are square and flush.
Step 3: Create the Entrance Hole
Using a 1-1/4-inch drill bit, bore an entrance hole in the center of the front panel, 1-1/2 inches from the top.
Step 4: Attach the Roof
Cut a piece of plywood to fit the top of the box, allowing for a 1-inch overhang on all sides. Glue and nail the plywood in place, ensuring it extends beyond the edges of the box to provide protection from the elements.
Step 5: Smooth and Weatherproof
Sand down any rough edges on the box. To make the box more weather-resistant, apply a thin layer of exterior wood sealer or paint. Allow it to dry completely before installing the box.
Step 6: Mount the Box
Choose a suitable location for the nesting box, ideally facing east or southeast. Mount the box at least 5 feet off the ground on a tree, pole, or fence post.
Use galvanized screws or bolts to secure the box firmly. Avoid placing the box in direct sunlight or areas exposed to strong winds.
Tips for Success:
- Use untreated lumber as treated wood can be harmful to birds.
- Provide adequate ventilation by drilling a few small holes in the bottom of the box.
- Clean out the nest box annually to remove old nesting material and prevent disease.
- Observe the box regularly to ensure cardinals are nesting and have access to it.
- Enjoy the beauty of cardinals nesting and raising their young in your backyard.
