Plans for Building a Bluebird Box

Bluebirds are a beautiful and welcome sight in any garden. They are also very beneficial, as they eat insects that can damage plants. If you want to attract bluebirds to your backyard, one of the best things you can do is to build them a nest box. Here are the plans you need to get started:

Materials:

  • 1x6 pine board (12 inches long)
  • 1x4 pine board (12 inches long)
  • 1x2 pine board (8 inches long)
  • 1/2-inch plywood (12 inches square)
  • 1-inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • Nail set
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cut the 1x6 pine board into two pieces, each 6 inches long. These will form the sides of the box.
  2. Cut the 1x4 pine board into two pieces, each 5 inches long. These will form the front and back of the box.
  3. Cut the 1x2 pine board into two pieces, each 4 inches long. These will form the perches for the bluebirds.
  4. Cut the 1/2-inch plywood into a 12-inch square. This will form the bottom of the box.
  5. Assemble the box by gluing and screwing the sides, front, and back together. Make sure that the perches are positioned about 2 inches from the bottom of the box.
  6. Attach the plywood bottom to the box using wood glue and screws.
  7. Drill a 1-inch hole in the front of the box, about 1 inch from the top. This will be the entrance hole for the bluebirds.
  8. If desired, paint or stain the box to protect it from the elements.
  9. Hang the box in a sunny spot, about 5-6 feet off the ground. Make sure that there are no obstacles within 3 feet of the box.

Tips:

  • Use untreated wood to build the box, as treated wood can be harmful to birds.
  • Make sure that the entrance hole is big enough for bluebirds to enter, but not so big that predators can get inside.
  • Place the box in a location where it will get plenty of sunlight, but is also protected from the wind.
  • Clean out the box every year after the nesting season to remove any old nesting material.
By following these plans, you can build a beautiful and functional bluebird box that will attract these beautiful birds to your backyard for years to come.
